Ranking linear budget sets with different available goods: A note

چکیده

Xu (2004), Kolm (2004; 2009) and Miyagishima (2009) study the problem of ranking linear budget sets in terms of freedom of choice. In their researches, the set of available goods is fixed. However, there would be cases in which new goods become available due to innovation. Recent examples of such goods include commodities and services relevant to information technology. In this paper, we consider the problem of ranking linear budget sets with different available goods. We introduce axioms which are respectively justified in terms of two notions of freedom, “freedom of choice” and “well-being freedom”, as well as two basic axioms. By using these axioms, we characterize two ranking rules on the basis of the two notions of freedom. Our ranking rules could be used for comparing degrees of freedom in different points of time, or in different countries.

A note on "An interval type-2 fuzzy extension of the TOPSIS method using alpha cuts"

The technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) is a method based on the ideal solutions in which the most desirable alternative should have the shortest distance from positive ideal solution and the longest distance from negative ideal solution. Depending on type of evaluations or method of ranking, different approaches have been proposing to calculate distances ...

On the volume-ranking of opportunity sets in economic environments

The domain of polyconvex sets, i.e. finite unions of convex, compact, Euclidean sets, is large enough to encompass most of the opportunity sets typically encountered in economic environments, including non-linear or even non-convex budget sets, and opportunity sets arising from production sets. We provide a characterization of the volume-ranking as defined on the set of all polyconvex sets, rel...

A Revealed Preference Test of Quasi-Linear Preferences

We provide criteria for a set of observed choices to be generated by a quasi-linear preference relation. These criteria are valid if choice sets are compact and downward closed and do not require preferences to be convex. We show that under the added assumption that choice sets can be represented by linear budget sets, our condition also implies the existence of a quasi-linear utility represent...

Research centers' ranking and resource management

In recent decade, there has been an increase in the number of research centers and the allocated budget and resources to research in Iran. These research centers show widely different performance and research impacts. Identifying the sources of such differences can help the research sector managers improve the effectiveness of distributed resources. This study was performed on 28 research cent...

ON REAL ECONOMIC FREEDOM by Serge - Christophe KOLM

A priori, real economic freedom is purchasing (and selling) power. Yet, Xu’s theorem comforts ranking the freedom of choice provided by budget sets as their volume in deriving it from three axioms. However, one and a half of these axioms can be discussed. In contrast, the standard measure of purchasing power leads one to order the freedom provided by budget sets as the distance to the origin of...
